A collection of rare books and manuscripts of Russian authors, collected by American collector Robert Eden Martin, will be put up for auction on November 28 in London at the auction house Christie`s.
According to representatives of Christie `s,” a total of 228 offered for sale of books and manuscripts – superb examples of Russian literature of the beginning of XIX – mid XX centuries “.The most notable lots will be: a gift copy of the first edition of the “Stone” by Osip Mandelstam, dated 1913. The estimated value of the lot is from 60 to 90 thousand pounds.
Another curious lot – the first edition of “Evenings on a farm near Dikanka” by Nikolai Gogol (1831-1832) estimated by experts of the auction house at 50-70 thousand pounds sterling. Another “pearl” – the first separate edition of the first chapter of “Eugene Onegin” in the original paperback 1825 cost 25-35 thousand pounds sterling.
